The words we need after falling short can be very few, and this verse gives them: "forgive and have mercy." After snapping at his child over unfinished homework, a father sits on the edge of the bed once the child is asleep and whispers them. May these few words be ready on our tongues the next time we fall short.

Love in a marriage is more than warm feelings; this verse names both "affection and mercy" as placed between spouses. In the middle of an argument about bills, a wife notices how tired her husband looks and softens her voice before she finishes the sentence. May we let a little of that mercy in during our next disagreement at home.

Good done in the cold and the dark is not done alone, because this verse places Allah with the "doers of good." Before sunrise, a man clears the snow from his elderly neighbor's steps, expecting no thanks and wanting only to please his Lord. May we carry that quiet company into one small kindness today.

Before a hard conversation, this verse asks for help with the heart first and then the words: "expand for me my breast" and "untie the knot from my tongue." Waiting outside her manager's office to ask for a fair raise, a woman breathes slowly and quietly asks for both. Today we might say this prayer before one conversation that makes us nervous.

This verse asks forgiveness for ourselves and for the people who raised us in the same breath: "forgive me and my parents." After a tense phone call with his father, a young man sits on the porch steps and asks forgiveness for both of them, his own sharp words included. Today we might pray for our parents right after a moment that tests our patience with them.

This verse closes with a humble request: "accept my supplication." Rolling up his prayer mat in a quiet corner of a crowded airport, a traveler adds one more line, asking that what he has just said be received. May we leave a moment at the end of our own prayers today to ask the same.

Being trusted with something and staying among good people belong together in this verse. Left in charge of his younger siblings for the evening, a teenage boy whispers a prayer to look after them well and to stay the kind of person good people would welcome. Today we might pair one small responsibility with the words "join me with the righteous."

The prayer in this verse asks for more than good families; it also asks, "make us an example for the righteous." In a long checkout line, a father answers a rude stranger gently while his small daughter holds his hand and watches. May we notice one small way today that the people near us learn from what we do.

In this verse, honesty about ourselves comes first, and only then the plea for forgiveness and mercy: "we have wronged ourselves." On the bus home after taking credit she did not earn, a woman admits it to her Lord instead of explaining it away. May we find the courage today to say those words and mean them.

A whole life can be offered, not only its prayers, and this verse holds them together: "my living and my dying are for Allah." Near the end of a long shift, a nurse goes back to check once more on a frightened patient, and that care can be part of the same offering as her prayer. May we notice one ordinary task today that we could do for Him.

When something we counted on is taken, this verse turns us back to what was never ours to lose: "we belong to Allah." Holding to our own faith does not need a quarrel; this verse says it plainly: "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." A student steps out between classes to pray while a friend saves the seat and keeps studying, and neither one needs to argue. Today we might hold to our faith gently and leave the debate aside.

Small does not mean unseen: this verse tells us that whoever does "an atom's weight of good will see it." Wiping up a spill someone else left in the break room at work, without mentioning it to anyone, is a good of just that size. Today, a small good done quietly is a fine place to begin.

A single night outweighs a very long stretch of time in this verse: the Night of Decree, when the Qur'an was sent down, is "better than a thousand months." We cannot make a night like that one, but on a short visit to an aging parent we can put the phone away and stop counting the minutes. Today we might give one brief visit our whole attention.

When a harsh or restless thought creeps in, this verse gives us somewhere to turn: "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind." At a kitchen table late at night, when a quiet voice says we are not enough, those words can be our first reply. May we reach for that refuge whenever the whispering starts.
